The OraQuick at home test kit detects the presence of HIV anti-bodies using a mouth swab instead of blood and gives the results in 20-40 minutes. Individuals can now test themselves for the virus in the privacy of their homes or anywhere convenient for them. The kit has been in use in the medical community for a while but has just been approved for use within the general population. It is speculated that the retail cost for the kit will be about $60, it is presently marketed to health personnel at $17.50. The kit has an accuracy rate of 92%
When will this get to Africa? At the equivalent of about N10,000, will people be able to afford it?
