A 70 year old woman in Ekiti state Mrs Rebecca Adewumi was tortured to death for being a witch by youths of Omuo, Ekiti state in the presence of the town's chiefs.
Daughter of the deceased Mrs Grace Smith told journalists in Ado ekiti on thursday that her mother was stripped naked and forced to drink some concoction believed to have the potency to exorcise her. She was beaten, her head was shaved, she was then locked up in a room with her relatives prevented from seeing her until she gave up the ghost on 30th of june.
Herordeal started when her now deceased stepson, Ola took ill and the boy's mother accused Mrs Adewumi of being responsible for the boy's sickness. She was dragged to the Oba's palace where she was allegedly stripped naked in the presence of the Olomuo of Omuo and some chiefs and residents of the town. It was then she was forced to drink the concoction that would make her confess her witchcraft or or she would die after seven days. The poor woman was still alive after seven days but that was not enough proof for her tormentors, they dragged the 70 year old outside and flogged her repeatedly. She died 3 days after she was tortured.
The DPO of Omuo said nobody had been arrested in connection with the case because no eyewitnesses had come forward to accuse anybody of wrongdoing.
