LAGBUS TO CARRY PASSENGERS FREE FOR RAMADAN CELEBRATION

The Lagos state government has directed the management of the state transport company, LAGBUS to offer free rides to residents on Sallah day.
In a statement by the PRO of LAGBUS, Mr Durojaiye Olanrewaju ''the gesture was the organisation's contribution to the eid festivities''

The free bus rides wilol be from 6am to 10pm on all the 46 routes of the LAGBUS service.

PRESIDENCY SAYS POWER SUPPLY TO REACH 9000 MW IN THE NEXT FEW MONTHS

After reaching a record breaking power supply output of 4237MW, with a reserve of 70MW last week, the presidency has revealed that power supply will reach 9000MW in the next few months.
A statement from the Senior special assistant to the president on Public affairs revealed the administration would achieve this number, when it completed 10 projects under the National integrated power plants (NIPP) project. The projects on completion will add 4960MW to the National grid.
The power projects anticipated are Ihovbor in Edo state (451MW), Omotosho in Ondo state (451MW), Olorunsogo in Ogun state (750MW), Sapele in Delta state (451MW), Geregu in Kogi state(434MW), Egbema in Imo state (338MW), Gbarain in Bayelsa state(225MW), Omoku in Rivers state (225MW), Calabar in Cross river state (561MW) and Akoji in Abia (1074MW).
The Federal Government, in a statement by Mr Olusanya Awosan said ''this administration met 10 abandoned NIPP projects and has successfully revitalised all. More importantly, they are all within the range of 95 - 100 percent completion stage and are awaiting gas supply which government has taken very concrete steps to address.

BOKO HARAM IN PEACE TALKS WITH GOVERNMENT?

According to the voice of America, a spokesperson for the militant Islamic group, Boko Haram, Habu Mohammed claims that the sect is engaged in talks with the government in a bid to end the violence inflicted in the northern part of Nigeria.
In a statement obtained by the VOA Habu Mohammed who claims to be a deputy to Boko Haram leader Sheikh Abubakar Shekau says the militant group decided to initiate the discussion in response to numerous appeals for peace in the country. The sataement was given to the VOA in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. The Nigerian government has not officially confirmed whether or not it is in peace talks with the group.

Boko Haram has been responsible for a slew of deadly attacks in Northern Nigeria including the bombing of the U.N building in Abuja.

NIGERIAN PARENTS JAILED IN THE U.K FOR BEATING THEIR CHILDREN

A Nigerian couple in the U.K, Joseph and Gloria Musa were jailed for 7 years each for beating their children, claiming they were possessed by evil spirits! They beat their children with brooms, wires and hoovers and gave their one year old baby a morphine overdose which nearly killed her.
 Five of the kids were rescued when when the eldest passed a heart wrenching note out through the window of their home. The note read '' my mum is the worst mum ever because she can't cope with the five of us, her broken hand and being pregnant, she always leaves me out, so i always starve and i am forced to work. if i don't get enough housework done, i am beaten without mercy with the wooden end of a broom. i have scars all over me to prove it. i can't stay here, i would like a new mum''. The note was found by a neighbor who called the police.
The couple claimed they were victims of a conspiracy and alleged that there was a witch-hunt against them by a prosecution witness, who they claim gave evidence because she wanted to ''steal'' their children away from them.
As they left court after the sentencing, the couple screamed their innocence ''we are innocent, this is a miscarriage of justice. The two will be deported back home after they serve their sentence.

POLICE OFFICIALLY DROP MURDER CHARGE AGAINST BANKER SUSPECTED TO HAVE KILLED LASTMA OFFICIAL

Mrs Yinka Johnson, the staff of Standard IBTC who was alleged to have killed a LASTMA official while on duty has been freed of the murder charge brought against her by the Nigerian police. On further investigation of the case, the Police, LASTMA officials, eyewitnesses and members of the press visited the scene of the accident on Monday and determined that it was not Mrs Johnson's car that hit and killed the deceased LASTMA official, Hammed Balogun. The Police officially dropped the case after convincing eye witness accounts, coupled with video and pictures of how the accident happened.

She was instead charged with one-count of reckless driving and made an appearance in court today.She was granted bail and the case was adjourned by the judge till the 3rd of September.

PHCN WORKERS WITH SCHOOL CERTIFICATE TO GET 8 MILLION NAIRA SEVERANCE PACKAGE

The severance package to be paid by the Federal governmment to PHCN staff in the on-going privatisation process will range from 8 million to 38 million. The least qualified staff with a school certificate holder will go home with 8 million while the highest officer would go home with 38 million. The Minister of power, Bart Nnaji revealed this on Monday while addressing State house correspondents in Abuja after a briefing with President Goodluck Jonathan.

The Minister refuted the insinuations from several quarters that the PHCN staff were receiving a flat payment of N85,000. ''the talk about some staff going home with N85,000 is from people who have a different mission'', ''the PHCN unions are constituting themselves as outlaws'' the Minister commented.

CODE OF CONDUCT BUREA INVESTIGATES ASSETS OF GOVERNORS,MINISTERS

The Chairman of The Code of conduct bureau Mr Sam Saba revealed yesterday that the CCB has commenced the verification of the personal assets of Governors and Ministers based on the assets declaration forms filled and presented them.
The CCB recently gave the Governors of the 36 states states and the Federal ministers a three month deadline to declare their personal assets, a directive which they had complied with. The CCB chairman maintained the determination of the board to recommend any of the officials found wanting for prosecution by the Code of conduct Tribunal.
Mr Saba revealed this during a visit by the founder of the Deeper Life bible church Pastor W.F Kumuyi whom he hailed ''the truth is that the quantum of money being taken out of Nigeria everyday is enormous. if not for the blessings of God this country would have been bankrupt a long time ago, that is why we thank God for the intervention of Men of God like Pastor Kumuyi''. When asked by journalists why CCB never scrutinised the personal assets of some pastors who allegedly own fleets of cars and private jets he responded ''our jurisdiction does not extend to pastors and other religious leaders''

ANOTHER SHOOTING IN AMERICA

A gunman in Texas shot and killed two people before being shot by law enforcement called to the scene near Texas A and M University. This incident comes just one month after the Aurora cinema shooting where a gunman went wild during a viewing of Batman the'' dark knight rises'' killing fourteen and injuring several others and barely a week after another gunman killed seven Sikhs at a Temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. The three people confirmed dead were the gunman, a constable, Brian Bachmann and an unidentified civilian. Three people were also injured. Authorities say the shooting happened around noon a few blocks away from the University. Details are a bit sketchy but it seems the constable was called on the scene to oversee an eviction and the was shot by the gunman in the process.

FEDERAL GOVT DECLARES 20TH AND 21ST RAMADAN HOLIDAY

The Federal government in a statement signed by the Permanent secretary of the Ministry of Interior Abba Moro declared Monday August 20th and Tuesday August 21st public holidays for the Eid -el-Fitri celebration. The celebrations mark the end of the one month fasting period for adherents of the Islamic faith. Yepeeeeeeee it's going to be a long weekend. Plenty of ram meat too!

The Hip-Hop world awards, alternatively known as the Headies will be hosted by the incomparable duo of singer-songwriter Omawumi and Chocolate city rapper M.I. Imagine coming home to meet a wild Leopard in your home! An Indian man in Guwahati, India met just that, barely escaping with his life. He was attacked by the Leopard which had wandered into the town possibly in search of food. A witness, Nipu Das told the local IANS news agency ''we were simply shocked and stunned to find the leopard inside the house and soon the cat started attacking''. The animal bit and severely scratched the victim, nearly scalping him before running away.

The wild-life team finally arrived to sedate the Leopard after a two hour rampage during which it injured four people.

TEENAGE MOTHER DUMPS BABY GIRL IN CHURCH

Parishioners of Saint Augustine's catholic Church, Ibusa, Delta state got the shock of their lives over the weekend when they met a new born baby girl at the entrance to their church when they arrived for early morning mass.
According to eye-witnesses the mother left a note for the Parish priest pleading with him to take care of the baby till she returned ''at the appropriate time'' to claim her back. She added that the baby girl be named ''ogechi''.

SAUDI ARABIA PLAN TO BUILD WOMEN-ONLY CITY

Oil rich Saudi Arabia is planning to build a new city exclusively for women. Due to the increased agitation for  more freedom for women and calls for increased participation of women in the economy, the Saudi industrial property authority(MODON) is designing the women-only city with construction to commence next year. The objective of the city is to enable career minded women to work and still be within the limits of Sharia law which discourages interaction between men and women and places more emphasis on women as home builders instead of breadwinners.

Due to internal and international pressure Saudi Arabia is currently reforming it's extremely strict policies on women's rights and freedom allowing women the right to vote and be voted for in municipal elections in 2011. The country is embarking on the integration of more women into the workforce. Plans are in place to replace foreign sales people with Saudi women. Recently, female sales staff started replacing men in cosmetic stores and lingerie shops which previously had only male attendants. Women represent only about 15% of the total workforce in the country.

Despite the reforms Saudi Arabia remains the only country in the world where women are not allowed to drive and just recently sent female participants to any Olympic games for the first time ever.

SPICE GIRLS TIPPED TO PERFORM AT THE CLOSING CEREMONY OF THE LONDON OLYMPICS

The Spice girls were conspicuously absent at the opening ceremony of the London games. Their absence was noted by quite a few people cognizant of the iconic status of the 90's British super-group. Though the line up of acts for the closing ceremony for the London games is being kept a secret there is speculation that the Spice girls, George Micheal, Muse and Ed Sheehan will be performing at the closing event dubbed ''a symphony of British music''. NIGERIA DISQUALIFIED FROM THE 4 X 400 RELAY RACE

After coming in at 7th position in the 4 x 400 relay, the Nigerian team was disqualified. The team comprising Omolara Omotosho, Ajoke Odumosu, Bukola Abogunloko and Regina George. The reason for the disqualification was not specified.

15 YEAR OLD NIGERIAN GIRL ACCEPTED INTO HARVARD

A Nigerian teenager Saheela Ibraheem has been accepted into Harvard University at the tender age of fifteen. Saheela who was accepted into 13 institutions including Princeton, Columbia and Harvard settled for Harvard after falling in love with the University's campus. The teenager spoke with CBS 2's Cindy Hsu ''if you are passionate about what you do and i am passionate about most of these things especially with math and science, it will work out very well''
Her mother Shakeerat Ibrahim, said ''Saheela has been way ahead of the academic game since kindergarten, never cutting corners and trying to do everything on her own''. She plans to become a research scientist and study the human brain.
The teenager speaks four languages - English, Spanish, Latin and Arabic.

THIRD MAINLAND BRIDGE MAY OPEN AHEAD OF SCHEDULE

The third mainland bridge may be opened earlier than announced, this was made known on Friday by the Minister of Works, Mike Onolememen after he inspected work going on currently on the bridge's expansion joints. according to him ''the replacement of the eight expansion joints on the Third mainland bridge may be completed ahead of the November 7 deadline due to the level of work currently going on''
According to the Minister there has been a gain of approximately one week on the timetable of the repair works on the bridge. ''this means that if we suatain the momentum we will be able to deliver the project ahead of the scheduled delivery date of Novemeber 7, 2012. The contract for the replacement joints was awarded to Messrs Boroni Prono and Company ltd in 2011 at a cost of over N1billion.
The Minister added that as part of the Federal Government's investment in road infrastructure in the Nation's former capital, Lagos, the Federal executive council had approved the transaction advisory consultancy services for the expansion and modernization of the Muritala Muhammed International Airport approach road to give a befitting approach to visitors coming to the country for the first time.

The picture was accidentally posted by Facebook's Director of Engineering, Andrew Bosworth who also appears in the picture. It shows a shirtless Mark Zuckerberg with a couple of people. FEMALE BANKER CRUSHES ON-DUTY LASTMA OFFICIAL???

Yinka Johnson , a staff of Standard IBTC bank allegedly killed a LASTMA official in the course of his duty on Friday along the Lekki-Ajah expressway while trying to escape from law enforcement who apprehended her for driving against traffic.

The incident occurred at Mega city, Ajah. She had been stopped by three LASTMA officials while driving against traffic and in attempting to escape apprehension, crushed Hammed Balogun and took off into Ikota estate where security men barricaded the gates and refused law enforcement entry. The area commander Mr Felix Vhlami had to call for back-up before she could be apprehended.
 The LASTMA official was taken to Germaine hospital where he died from his severe injuries. The banker was taken to Ajiwe police station but has been transferred to CID Panti for further investigation.
According to a source who sent a bb message on blackberry , the real story is not what LASTMA is trying to portray. the bb message reads '' dear all, i am sure we have all heard the story going round about the banker who allegedly killed a lastma officer. Eyewitnesses on the scene insist that the lastma official was infact knocked down by a danfo bus he was trying to accost after he arrested the banker for a traffic offence and whose car was about to  be towed as can be seen from the picture on the lastma website, lastma is trying to skew the story as murder and she is currently in detention. pls note that i have seen her car and it doesn't have a single dent on it. Probably, this weekend at their Chateau in the South of France. The gist is that the couple are at their Chateau Mirabel, in Provence, France and preparations are ongoing  for a big party. The Kano state Hisbah board arrested 20 people for deliberate non-compliance with the tenets of the Ramadan fasting period of not eating and drinking. The  affected individuals will be held by authorities for three days to learn how to fast.
Plain clothes personnel of the Hisbah board have been conducting raids in different parts of Kano aimed at arresting Muslims who have refused to observe the Ramadan fast. The individuals nabbed also include women. Muslim women in Islamic law are exempted from fasting during their monthly cycles.

Music sensation Davido paid a surprise visit to Pinefield college for the graduation of the minister of Aviation, Mrs Stella Oduah's son Chineye Oduah Igwe's graduation ceremony.
 The damiduro singer performed a few of his hits and gave a short speech to the students. He also signed autographs for the excited students.
